The Periodic Table of U.S. Presidents

Many years ago, when George W. Bush was president, I created a Periodic Table of U.S. Presidents, grouped by their various attributes. Inspired by the famous Periodic Table of the Elements, it’s a whimsical and educational chart that features our first 43 (now 44) presidents.

When Barack Obama was elected, I updated it to include him, but I haven’t made any more updates since 2012, so it’s more of a historical table than a keeping-up-with-the-headlines one.

Still, those who enjoy U.S. history and/or periodic tables of things may enjoy it. It includes:

  • A column for the Mount Rushmore presidents.
  • Separate rows for the one-term (or less) and two-term (or more) presidents.
  • Color-coding by political party, with the Democrats on the left and the Republicans on the right.
  • A section for the “Tecumseh’s Curse” presidents who were elected in a term ending in zero and died in office.
  • Indicators for dynastic presidents (related to another presidents), presidents appearing on U.S. currency, impeachments, resignations, and more.

It even got a shout-out in Mental Floss a few years back, which listed it alongside eight other periodic tables, including a Periodic Table of The Empire Strikes Back Elements, a periodic table of cupcakes, and a periodic table of Minecraft.

You can buy a T-shirt, mug, or hat through my Periodic Presidents CafePress store. If you (or someone you like to buy presents for) are a history buff, a political science fan, or just someone who likes colorful boxes arranged to look like sciency stuff, you might enjoy this little bit of fun.
